Topic: Beyond Resilience: DoD's efforts--and opportunity--in building island antifragility
Presenter: Jeff Mikulina | Executive Director, Climate Hawaiʻi | Former Executive Director of Blue Planet Foundation
Presentation Synopsis: For decades, the U.S. military has helped support clean energy, energy security, and climate resilience solutions in Hawaiʻi, from solar and microgrids to wave energy research and nature-based approaches to coastal protection. Many of these investments offer lessons that extend well beyond the military. Jeff Mikulina, Executive Director of Climate Hawaiʻi will explore these efforts through the lens of antifragility: the idea that the strongest systems don’t simply withstand disruption, but learn, adapt, and become stronger because of it. Drawing on three decades working at the intersection of energy, climate, policy, and innovation in Hawaiʻi, Jeff will highlight examples of DoD leadership and consider what they can teach us about building a more secure, resilient, and adaptive Hawaiʻi in an era of increasing uncertainty.
