This workshop series teaches you the basics of garment care and repair. Each session stands on its own. The series builds a practical foundation for repairing, altering, and extending the life of your garments. No sewing experience needed.

Workshop Series Overview 

 

This beginner-friendly series includes three workshops tailored for those interested in taking better care of their clothing. The workshops: Handstitching & Basic Alterations (April 11); Sewing Machine Basics (April 12); Visible Mending For Beginners April 18).

With a total of nine hours of hands-on instruction, participants will gradually develop a practical skill set, progressing from hand stitching to machine sewing, and then to mending techniques. Each session is thoughtfully designed to build upon the previous one, providing foundational knowledge that empowers you to repair, alter, and prolong the life of your garments.

Quality clothing deserves quality care. Learning how to fix garments means you are less likely to replace them. No previous sewing experience is needed to participate in these workshops.  Skill Level: Beginner

SESSION 1 - Hand Stitching and Basic Alterations (April 11)

$40.00 +$1.50 fee

In this three-hour workshop, you will learn the foundational hand stitches used in garment care and repair, including running stitch, backstitch, and whipstitch. You will practice measuring and hemming by hand, and reattaching buttons and hooks. By the end of the session, you will leave with the skills to extend the life of your garments.

 

Tools to bring: hand sewing needles (assorted sizes), thread (2-3 colors), small scissors or thread snips, a seam ripper, straight pins, and a thimble. Sewing kits will be available for purchase.

SESSION 2 - Sewing Machine Basics (April 12)

$40.00 +$1.50 fee

 This three-hour workshop covers how to thread a machine (top and bottom), wind a bobbin, and sew a straight seam with confidence. You will practice adjusting tension, stitch length, and foot pressure using fabric samples to practice sewing and hemming. The main focus of this workshop is on operating, troubleshooting, and understanding your sewing machine.

 

Tools to bring: sewing machine *(+ manual), neutral-color threads, fabric, sewing kit.


Sewing kits will be available for purchase.

SESSION 3 - Visible Mending: The Basics (April 18)

$40.00 +$1.50 fee

This three-hour workshop introduces you to fundamental approaches to repair: visible mending, which incorporates the repair into the garment's design. You will practice basic darning and a simple running stitch on fabric samples. You will leave with a working knowledge of both methods.

Bring a small garment or textile from home that needs repair. While you may not finish during the session, you’ll get guidance to start and learn the skills needed to complete the repair on your own.

 

Tools to bring: hand-sewing needles, embroidery floss in colors of your choice, small scissors, a darning mushroom or small round object to support the fabric, straight pins, and fabric samples for practice.
