Soundscapes: A Sensory Expedition

An evening of improvised electro-acoustic soundscapes for ragas and icaros—performed by Silvia Nakkach, Stu Pender, and Shawn Feeney.

Grammy-nominated composer Silvia Nakkach has been an exhilarating and unique bridge between American and South Asian musical traditions for more than 30 years. From a background in North Indian classical music and avant-garde composition, Nakkach has evolved her own style employing elements of minimal melodicism, electronic liminal sonorities, and orbital rhythmic materials that seeks to transcends the ordinary sense of time, and exploring the relation between music and space.

Stu Pender, Chicago-born musician and recording artist, weaves elements of jazz, ambience, minimalism, and songwriting into orchestrations for the guitar, voice, and laptop. He's showcased his talents as a guitarist across the United States & Canada, at The MoMA PS1, United Nations, The Fillmore, and The Beacon Theatre, and more. Stu’s debut full length album, Stillness In Motion, released in 2021 on the Youngbloods label, explores the delicate balance between slowing down and maintaining a sense of urgency towards action, earning acclaim from Los Angeles’ KCRW and Apple Music.

Shawn Feeney is a composer, performer, and visual artist. As a multi-instrumentalist and recording artist, Feeney crafts sonic worlds inspired by ambient, classical, electronic music, and more. His 2020 debut solo album, “Thin Places,” and 2021's "Bloom Infinitum" are centered around music written for quartz singing bowls.
